In a surprising political event in Warsaw, Szymon Hołownia, the Marshal of the Sejm and leader of the Poland 2050 party, visited Adam Bielan of the Law and Justice Party (PiS) in the early hours of last Friday. The meeting was reportedly also attended by Jarosław Kaczyński, leader of PiS, drawing significant attention and criticism from various political actors.
Hołownia took to social media to address the growing public interest, noting that the “excitement surrounding the meeting is neither justified nor warranted.” He identified himself as one of the few Polish politicians who frequently engages with representatives from both sides of the fiercely divided political spectrum. “Especially in these times,” Hołownia emphasized, “politicians need to engage in dialogue to avoid further division.”
However, this attempt at justification was met with dissatisfaction from within his own party. Tomasz Zimoch, a member of Poland 2050, openly criticized Hołownia’s remarks, calling them “humiliating.” He argued that the public’s concern was valid and voiced his disappointment that Hołownia did not appear to acknowledge this.

Further criticism came from other politicians, including Anna-Maria Żukowska of the Left party, who questioned whether late-night meetings in private residences were a usual practice for discussing legislative matters. Bartosz Arłukowicz, a member of the European Parliament, somewhat sarcastically remarked on the coincidental timing that both Hołownia and Kaczyński had available slots for a meeting at one in the morning.
The host of the meeting, Adam Bielan, dismissed any notion that the encounter was secretive. However, he maintained discretion about the topics discussed, citing the need for confidentiality as the host.
As the debate over this unusual meeting continues, it highlights the prevailing tensions within Polish politics and the challenges of maintaining dialogue across divided party lines. Hołownia’s actions, while intended to bridge gaps, have instead sparked scrutiny and debate over the appropriateness and transparency of political dialogues in Poland.
