As Poland transitions from a warm end of summer to autumn, a striking change in weather conditions is on the horizon. According to forecasts from the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW), a cold wave is expected to sweep across the country, bringing with it significantly cooler temperatures and overnight frosts.

Starting Monday, the majority of Poland experienced chilly and overcast conditions, with daytime temperatures barely reaching 12 degrees Celsius across most regions. In the mountainous areas, particularly at higher altitudes, snow mixed with rain is anticipated, and snow cover in the Tatra Mountains might increase by five centimetres in a single day.

On Tuesday, the forecast suggests persistent cloud cover with occasional rain showers, especially in the south, where up to ten litres of rain per square metre are expected. However, western and northwestern Poland might see some sunny breaks. In southern regions, daytime temperatures could drop to as low as nine degrees Celsius, while the western parts might experience slightly milder conditions at 14 degrees Celsius.

Nighttime temperatures are set to plummet further, reaching -2 to -3 degrees Celsius near the ground in foothill areas. This pattern of cold nights with ground frosts is expected to continue throughout the week.

Towards the end of the week, the weather is predicted to improve slightly on Thursday with increased sunny intervals, although southern Poland will remain cloudy with sporadic rain. In the mountains, snow and sleet are likely to persist.

Despite this brief respite, the weekend will see the return of more overcast and rainy conditions. Stronger showers are forecasted for Saturday in the southeast and for Sunday in the central and southern regions. Temperatures will remain subdued, generally hovering between 10 to 15 degrees Celsius, and only reaching a potential high of 18 degrees Celsius in the north on Saturday.

Overall, as the country braces for a cooler spell, residents should prepare for a mix of cloud, rain, and frost, a stark reminder of the season’s shift from the warmth of summer to the chill of autumn.
