In a surprising political move, Jarosław Kaczyński, the leader of Poland’s ruling party, Law and Justice (PiS), has expelled seven councillors from the party’s club in the regional assembly of Lower Silesia. This unexpected shake-up comes amid reported internal disputes within the party ranks surrounding regional governance and leadership decisions.
The councillors who were ousted from the PiS are Magdalena Brodowska, Przemysław Czarnecki, Łukasz Lach, Marcin Krzyżanowski, Paweł Kura, Krzysztof Mróz, and Ewelina Szydłowska-Kędziera. According to local sources, the dismissals are linked to internal conflicts over the leadership roles within the PiS club, particularly regarding previous attempts to remove Piotr Karwan, the club’s chairman. It was reported that Łukasz Lach had been chosen to lead the club, which may have fueled tensions.

Despite the expulsion, the balance of power in the Lower Silesia assembly remains unchanged. The current majority is held by a coalition of the Civic Coalition (KO), the Polish People’s Party (PSL), and independent councillors, who control 21 seats. As a result, Kaczyński’s decision does not alter the political landscape of the regional assembly.
Ewelina Szydłowska-Kędziera, one of the expelled councillors, confirmed the news but indicated that an official statement would be released soon, suggesting the possibility of an appeal or further actions by the ousted group. Speculation hints at a more extensive power struggle within the party, with Elżbieta Witek, the former Speaker of the Sejm, possibly involved in the background decisions.
This development coincides with a visit from Jarosław Kaczyński to Wrocław, the capital of Lower Silesia, where he conducted meetings as part of his “Wygrała Polska” (“Poland Wins”) campaign to rally support among voters nationwide. Observers see his move as a strategic effort to reinforce loyalty and maintain discipline within the party.
