The Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Białystok has announced charges against Marian B., the former head of Poland’s Supreme Audit Office (NIK). Investigations revolving around him have been ongoing since 2019, primarily concerning allegations of corruption and abuse of power.
The charges specifically relate to encouraging members of the National Revenue Administration to disclose sensitive financial information which was not intended for public access. The prosecutor’s office stated that Marian B. is accused of inciting these officials to reveal information protected under financial confidentiality laws. Additional accusations involve persuading public officials to overstep their authority or neglect their duties for personal or financial gain. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison.
This development surfaces from a broader investigation triggered by reports from the Central Anti-Corruption Bureau (CBA), the General Inspector of Financial Information, and members of the former Civic Coalition party. Initially, the case centered on allegations that Marian B. had submitted false asset declarations by failing to report income generated from a property he owned in Krakow.

In a related incident in 2021, the CBA detained Marian B.’s son, Jakub B., his daughter-in-law, Agnieszka, and Tadeusz G., the ex-director of the Krakow Revenue Office. They face allegations of fraudulently obtaining approximately 120,000 zlotys from the National Fund for the Renovation of Monuments in Krakow, alongside evading around 80,000 zlotys in VAT. Both denied wrongdoing, providing statements in their defence. Financial securities have been applied to both.
Tadeusz G. allegedly confessed to illicitly leaking details about tax audits and related procedures concerning Marian B. to him. Despite these admissions, none of the cases linked to this investigation have yet concluded with a formal indictment.
As Marian B. no longer possesses immunity from prosecution, the Białystok prosecutor’s office chose this time to proceed with the charges. Initially, a request to revoke his immunity as NIK President was made to the Polish Sejm in 2019 but was later withdrawn for further evidence collection. The case continues to unfold with keen public interest in Poland.
