During the Polish Jet Ski Championships on the Vistula River in Płock, a collision between two racing jet skis led to the death of a young competitor, according to information from the police and prosecutors.
The accident happened on Saturday, shortly before 2 p.m., during the First Round of the Polish Jet Ski Championships, held on a stretch of the Vistula next to the city’s riverside promenade and pier. Two drivers taking part in a race collided and were pulled under the water.
Emergency services, including water rescue teams and an air ambulance helicopter, arrived quickly at the scene. One of the drivers, a young man from the Lower Silesia region (reports initially gave his age as 18, later clarified to 19), was brought out of the water and given cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Despite the efforts of rescuers, he was pronounced dead.
The second driver, a 54-year-old man, also from Lower Silesia, did not suffer serious injuries. Police stated that a breathalyser test showed he had no alcohol in his system.
After the crash, the organisers – including the Polish Motorboat and Water Ski Association and the local Volunteer Water Rescue Service (WOPR) in Płock – made the decision to immediately stop the competition, which had been running since the morning.

Police officers and a prosecutor began work at the site soon after the incident. According to officials, they carried out detailed inspections of the accident location, examined the victim’s body and secured both jet skis involved in the collision. All race documentation, including rules for the event and instructions on how competitors were supposed to move along the course, was also collected.
The District Prosecutor’s Office in Płock announced that a formal investigation will be opened. Prosecutors indicated that it will probably be conducted under Article 160 of the Polish Penal Code (endangering a person’s life or health) and may also include Article 155 (unintentional manslaughter). At this stage, the investigation is focused on establishing the exact circumstances and direct cause of the accident, rather than pointing to any specific person or institution as responsible.
Prosecutors reported that they have already interviewed around a dozen witnesses, including all the competitors who took part in the particular race when the collision happened and several race officials. These interviews were done quickly, as the participants came from different parts of Poland and from abroad. Investigators also secured video material, including recordings made by drones, to reconstruct the sequence of events.
A post-mortem examination of the victim is planned for a later date, which prosecutors say should help clarify how the injuries were sustained and contribute to determining the cause of death.
The fatal crash has drawn attention in Polish media to safety during high-speed water sports events on rivers such as the Vistula. For now, officials stress that the inquiry is ongoing and that no final conclusions have yet been reached about what led to the tragedy in Płock.
