A large fire has destroyed a historic wooden villa in the village of Trójca in south-eastern Poland, near the well-known resort of Arłamów in the Bieszczady Mountains. The building was part of a former government hunting and leisure centre from the communist era.
According to the regional fire service, the alarm was raised at around 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. When firefighters arrived, the entire wooden house was already in flames. More than 50 firefighters in 13 fire service units took part in the operation to bring the blaze under control.
Before the fire crews reached the scene, seven people inside the villa managed to evacuate themselves. Medical teams treated two of them on site. Local officials reported that the causes of the fire are not yet known, and investigations are expected to continue.
The villa was one of the surviving buildings of the Hunting and Leisure Centre, opened in December 1973 and later incorporated into the Council of Ministers Centre in Arłamów. During the communist period in Poland, this secluded complex hosted leading figures such as Edward Gierek, then First Secretary of the ruling party, Prime Minister Piotr Jaroszewicz, as well as foreign leaders including French President Valéry Giscard d’Estaing and Yugoslav leader Josip Broz-Tito. Because of this role, the site has a particular historical and symbolic significance in modern Polish history.

Firefighters emphasised that the firefighting and damping-down work at the site could last for many hours, due to the construction and size of the wooden structure. Images released by local police show severe damage, with the building largely burned out.
The incident occurs against a wider backdrop of fire-related problems in the Podkarpackie region, where the Bieszczady Mountains are located. In the first days of March alone, firefighters there had already responded to dozens of grass and field fires on meadows, farmland and unused land. Since the beginning of the year, over one hundred such fires have burned nearly 20 hectares of land.
Fire service representatives describe grass burning as a persistent and dangerous practice in parts of Poland. Although some people believe that setting fire to dry grass helps new plants grow, experts stress that it destroys soil quality, interrupts the formation of humus and releases toxic substances into the air. They also point out that even a light wind can cause flames to spread rapidly, threatening forests, homes, farm buildings, wildlife and, in some cases, human life.
While the cause of the Trójca villa fire has not been established and authorities have not linked it directly to grass burning, the case has drawn additional attention to the broader issue of fire safety in the region. The fire service reminds the public that setting fire to grass is illegal in Poland and can result in fines, arrest or, in severe cases, prison sentences of up to 10 years. Farmers who break the law also risk the reduction or loss of EU agricultural subsidies.
For now, the main focus of local services is on examining the burned structure, confirming the exact sequence of events and determining how the fire started. No fatalities have been reported, but the destruction of one of the last villas of the former government complex marks a further loss of architectural and historical heritage in this remote mountain area of Poland.
