A recent survey has revealed that more than half of the Polish population supports the introduction of civil partnerships as a legal option for both heterosexual and same-sex couples. Conducted by Opinia24 for TVN24, the survey asked respondents whether they supported or opposed the legal recognition of such partnerships. Results showed that 54% of participants were in favour, while 34% opposed the idea. A further 12% of those surveyed were unsure or declined to answer.

This poll was carried out between October 13 and 14, 2025, involving a representative sample of 1,001 Polish citizens aged 18 and older. The method utilised a combination of computer-assisted telephonic interviews (CATI) and online interviews (CAWI) to gather the responses.

The discussion around civil partnerships in Poland has gained momentum, especially after recent political developments. There is a government proposal in place that aims to provide approximately 20 rights to couples choosing civil partnerships as opposed to marriage. Provisions include joint tax filing, inheritance rights, and access to a partner’s medical information. The agreement for such partnerships would be formalised by a notary and registered at a civil registry office.

The topic was initially brought to the legislative forefront in October 2024 when the government published draft bills regarding civil partnerships. However, these proposals did not proceed to a vote in the Council of Ministers. Subsequently, in June 2025, the Lewica party submitted these proposals to the Polish Sejm as parliamentary initiatives, while the PSL party introduced an alternative bill focusing on establishing a “closest person” status.

By September, the regulation of civil partnerships was listed as one of the government’s priorities, indicating a possible forthcoming change in Poland’s legal landscape concerning relationship recognition.
