A Russian vessel, the “Akademik B. Petrov,” recently drew attention as it operated in the Polish exclusive economic zone on the Baltic Sea. According to reports, the ship was constantly monitored by Polish military systems despite briefly disappearing from public tracking applications.
The “Akademik B. Petrov,” identified as a research ship, sparked curiosity due to its cessation of transmission on the Automatic Identification System (AIS), a requirement for most international shipping. This interruption, which lasted a few hours, led to speculation about the ship’s true purpose.
Military representatives reassured that the vessel presented no threat, emphasizing it was “constantly tracked and did not pose any danger,” as stated by Lieutenant Colonel Jacek Goryszewski of the Polish Armed Forces’ Operational Command. The ship was last recorded heading towards Kaliningrad, located north of Hel Peninsula.

Although officially tasked with scientific research for Moscow’s Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, there are suspicions regarding its potential intelligence-gathering missions. The ship’s presence near critical infrastructure and during NATO exercises has previously been noted, reinforcing these doubts.
Dr. Łukasz Wyszyński from the Polish Naval Academy in Gdynia commented on the capabilities of the “Akademik B. Petrov,” pointing out its sophisticated equipment which could support reconnaissance activities. He elaborated that the vessel’s appearance in strategic areas indicates possible Russian interest in intelligence operations and could symbolize Moscow’s political attention to these regions.
Earlier incidents near Norway, where the ship was spotted during significant German naval exercises, further feed into its reputation as a surveillance vessel. Such activities have led international observers to question the nature of its so-called research missions.
