Poland recently endured a series of severe storms which caused extensive disruptions across multiple regions, leaving around 90,000 people without electricity. The impact was particularly notable in the Lubuskie, Dolnośląskie, and Wielkopolskie provinces.

According to senior brigadier Karol Kierzkowski, the spokesperson for the State Fire Service, the majority of incidents involved removing downed trees and broken branches. These posed significant threats to safety and often obstructed roadways. Kierzkowski noted that the fire brigade logged 5098 incidents linked to the storms’ aftermath.

Among the regions most affected were the provinces of Śląsk, Zachodniopomorskie, and Wielkopolskie. In the city of Kołobrzeg, a woman sustained minor injuries after a tree branch fell on her while she was cycling. Other areas experienced power outages and damage to transportation networks, with urban tram services severely disrupted in cities like Katowice and Ruda Śląska.

On the rail network, service was halted on the line between Wrocław and Jelenia Góra due to overhead line damage, necessitating the introduction of replacement bus services until repairs were completed later that evening.

The Government Security Centre had issued alerts warning of potential severe storms and high winds, advising residents to take precautions such as securing outdoor objects and remaining indoors when possible. Despite these warnings, there were still localized reports of structural damage and personal injuries, including a second reported injury in Samborzec within the Świętokrzyskie region.

Efforts to restore services are ongoing, with emergency crews working tirelessly to clear debris and repair damaged infrastructure. This event highlights the vulnerability of the country to adverse weather conditions and the importance of preparedness for natural disasters.
