Marian Turski, once Moshe Turbowicz from Druskininkai, endured the atrocities of Nazi concentration camps at Auschwitz and Buchenwald. As a lifelong advocate for preserving the history of the Holocaust, he dedicated much of his life to education and reconciliation between Polish and Jewish communities.

Described by many as “the conscience of the modern world,” Turski was instrumental in founding the Museum of the History of Polish Jews (POLIN), where a memorial gathering followed his interment, reminiscing his invaluable contributions to historical remembrance. His efforts remind the world of the importance of dialogue, empathy, and solidarity in the face of intolerance.

Speaking at the funeral, Mayor Trzaskowski hailed Turski as a “true authority” whose quiet demeanour belied the powerful resonance of his words. “His passing is an irreparable loss,” he noted, emphasizing Turski’s legacy of integrity and wisdom in teaching generations the significance of kindness and understanding.

Friend and associate Piotr Wiślicki added emotional depth to the tribute, lauding Turski’s indomitable spirit and refusal to let hatred taint his humanity despite his harrowing experiences. Wiślicki recalled Turski’s enduring optimism and commitment to fostering mutual respect across divides of age, nationality, or belief.

Maintaining roles such as the editor of ‘Polityka’ magazine and vice-chair of the Jewish Historical Institute Association, Turski’s legacy includes his work against prejudice and for social unity. Underlining the ongoing relevance of his message, those present reflected on Turski’s warnings about the persistence of hate in today’s global environment.

The commemorative event at the POLIN Museum also featured a preview of a documentary highlighting Turski’s life and ideals. As Warsaw and the international community mourn his loss, Turski’s guiding principles of remembering and combating intolerance remain vital lessons for current and future generations.
