Kwidzyn Castle, a celebrated example of Gothic architecture in the Pomerania region of northern Poland, is set to close from September 2026 for a major restoration project lasting until 2030. Before work begins, the castle is hosting a farewell day on Sunday, 30 August 2026, when entry will cost just one Polish złoty.

The renovation, which will cost over 64 million złoty, is funded through the EU’s FEnIKS programme and the Polish state budget. Work is planned to cover all floors of the building, both inside and on the exterior façade. It will include securing the wooden roof structure, partially replacing the roof covering, and a full replacement of the electrical and fire-safety installations.

New exhibition spaces will also be created in an adjacent building, and the castle will be fully adapted for visitors with disabilities. A green space for tourists is planned near the gate. Construction work is expected to finish by mid-2029, with the castle reopening to visitors in 2030.

The farewell event on 30 August will run from 11am to 5pm. Visitors can enjoy a medieval music concert and postcard-making workshops, and will be welcomed by historical re-enactors in period costume. Those attending will also be able to preview the concept for a new permanent exhibition, titled “Taki oto Kwidzyn” (“This is Kwidzyn”), which the museum plans to open in 2028 at premises on the old town’s Kruka Street.

The castle, which first appeared in written records on 28 October 1334 under the name castrum Merginwerder, has held the status of a national historical monument since 2018. Its most distinctive feature is the gdanisko — a large defensive sanitary tower completed in the 1380s and connected to the main castle body by the world’s longest covered gallery, supported on five tall arches spanning roughly 55 metres.
