The Greek Supreme Court has announced its new leadership following the appointment of Konstantinos Tzavelas as prosecutor and Anastasia Papadopoulou as president. This decision, endorsed by Justice Minister Giorgos Floridis and ratified by the cabinet, reflects Greece’s periodic judicial appointments which are integral to maintaining the nation’s legal framework.

Konstantinos Tzavelas, previously a deputy prosecutor at the Supreme Court, was selected despite securing second place in the parliamentary Presidents’ Conference. It was reported that his colleague, Vasilis Floridis, who is related to the Minister of Justice, initially received the higher vote count. Nonetheless, Minister Floridis recommended Tzavelas for the position, substantiating the decision by stating it was based on comprehensive assessments during the selection process.

Tzavelas will serve until June 2026, with a career that includes oversight roles in anti-terrorism (2012-2021) and acting as spokesperson for the Supreme Court’s prosecution office. His tenure in the judicial arena began in 1991, ascending to his current position as deputy prosecutor in 2023. Tzavelas’s previous presidency of the Prosecutors’ Association of Greece underscores his extensive experience in legal leadership.

In tandem with Tzavelas’s appointment, Anastasia Papadopoulou has been named the new president of the Supreme Court. Papadopoulou, previously the vice president of the court, and director at the National School of Judges for the past three years, brings substantial experience to her new role. Although she ranked fourth in the vote among her peers, she won a majority in the parliamentary decision, affirming her capacity and support for the presidency.

Her term also extends to June 2026, wherein she will continue contributing to Greece’s highest judicial institution. Papadopoulou’s judicial career commenced in May 1989, and her ascendance to higher roles reflects her steadfast commitment to the legal profession.

This shift in leadership within Greece’s judiciary marks a significant evolution in the Supreme Court’s direction, aspiring to uphold the integrity and efficiency of the nation’s most prestigious legal body.
