The Greek Ministry of Infrastructure and Transportation has announced a significant initiative to enhance public safety by equipping all metro stations in Athens with defibrillators. This project, supported by a sponsorship from Masoutis Group, aims to provide immediate intervention capabilities for incidents of cardiac arrest.

In a collaborative effort with the Ministry of Health, a program is also being launched to introduce defibrillators in taxis across Athens. Participation in this initiative will be voluntary for taxi drivers, who will receive specialized training in first aid and the use of these life-saving devices.

Additionally, staff members from urban transport services will undergo similar training, ensuring the equipment can be used effectively if a critical situation arises. Each defibrillator will be linked to a central technical support system, offering remote guidance during emergencies and notifying necessary services if further assistance is required. This integration aligns with contemporary European standards for prevention and safety.

Konstantinos Kyranakis, the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transportation, emphasized the creation of a “prevention and immediate intervention network” to address cardiac arrest incidents, underscoring the importance of making life-saving equipment accessible in public transport and taxis. He highlighted the human-centric focus of such initiatives, reassuring citizens that help will always be available when needed the most.

Minister of Health, Adonis Georgiadis, expressed his commitment to this joint program, pointing out the strategic advantage of taxis constantly moving throughout urban areas, which enables them to respond quickly to sudden emergencies. He affirmed that with proper training and equipment, taxi drivers could potentially save lives, reinforcing the duty of the ministry to take action.

The installation of defibrillators in metro stations has already commenced, with the first equipped and trained taxis expected to be operational soon, marking a proactive step towards enhancing urban public health safety in Greece.
