A new wave of severe weather is forecast to hit Greece, bringing with it heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds starting Thursday, 2nd October 2025. The Greek meteorologist, Giannis Kallianos, has warned that a well-organised weather system will affect the country nationwide.

This system will bring widespread rains, storms, and a significant drop in temperatures, chiefly in the western, central, and northern regions, while snow is expected in the mountainous areas of northwestern Greece. Notably, in Western Macedonia, snowfall might occur even at altitudes above 700-800 meters following midnight on Thursday.

Rain and thunderstorms will begin late Wednesday night in the Ionian Sea and the western mainland, spreading across Greece by Thursday evening. The Eastern Aegean will experience the strongest effects by Friday morning before the intensity gradually decreases by Saturday, leaving only sporadic showers.

The Greek authorities have dispatched warnings via the 112 emergency service to residents in the Ionian Islands and regions such as Aetolia-Acarnania and Western Peloponnese, urging caution and adherence to safety guidelines. Similarly, Kallianos highlighted the prudence needed in utilising the 112 service, advising against its use based solely on predictive models without real-time validation.

According to another meteorologist, Klearchos Marousakis, the country might experience a brief respite today before the temperature drops significantly from Wednesday. This change is prompted by cold air masses interacting with warm waters of the central Mediterranean, potentially causing even harsher weather conditions.

The General Secretariat for Civil Protection has ensured that all regional and local authorities are on alert, with operational plans in place to manage potential flooding and other dangerous weather phenomena. The public is advised to secure loose objects, ensure drainage systems function correctly, and avoid unnecessary travel, especially across torrents and under large trees during the storms.

Residents are also warned to stay updated via the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) and follow any emergency instructions issued by local authorities as the system progresses.
