A 63-year-old man from Donousa, a small Greek island, has been fined over 1.7 million euros after authorities discovered 58 neglected cats on his property. The cats were found in a severely malnourished state, locked without proper access to food and water, leading to what have been described as squalid living conditions.
The intervention came after a report of animal cruelty motivated an investigation by local police. The property, once functioning as a site for rental accommodations and a restaurant, had been converted into an inadequate shelter for the felines.

Authorities have indicated that the penalty, believed to be the largest of its kind in Greece for such infractions, may rise with additional charges pending for missing health documentation and the absence of microchips that are required by law for animal registration.
The individual in question has a history of similar charges, having previously been involved in an analogous incident in Moschato, Attika. He was apprehended and is set to face the public prosecutor in Naxos on charges of violating animal protection laws, which are considered a felony under Greek legislation.
The police investigation revealed the deplorable state in which the animals were kept, prompting immediate legal action and an administrative fine. The case underscores ongoing efforts to tackle animal abuse and enforce animal welfare laws in Greece.
