Six islands in the South Aegean have seen a notable improvement in coastal conditions following the completion of the second clean-up cycle carried out by the Athanasios K. Laskaridis Public Benefit Foundation through its Typhoon Project.

The project’s operational team completed interventions on Syros, Mykonos, Delos, Antiparos, Despotiko, and Keros, recording clear improvements compared to the first clean-up cycle. Work in the Cyclades region is set to continue over the coming months.

One of the most striking aspects of the second cycle was the scale of local volunteer participation. On Mykonos, 918 pupils took part in clean-ups of three beaches over just six days — a figure described as exceptionally high for an island of that size. On Syros, the Typhoon team worked alongside students from the Merchant Marine Academy, raising environmental awareness among the country’s future sailors.

Beaches cleaned during the first mission in 2021 showed a significant reduction in pollution levels during this second cycle, which the foundation says confirms both the effectiveness of systematic intervention and growing local awareness.

Now in its seventh year, the Typhoon Project has contributed to the clean-up of 4,800 coastlines across Greece, removing more than 1,090 tonnes of waste and gathering data on coastal pollution. The project is currently carrying out its second full national clean-up cycle.
