A significant blaze broke out in an abandoned building behind the Piraeus electric railway station on Monday, 7 October 2024, sending dense smoke across the city and surrounding regions. The fire started in the evening, and emergency services swiftly responded to contain the situation.

The incident led to the mobilisation of 40 firefighters and nine vehicles, including two specialised aerial ladders, to combat the flames. The fire was brought under control shortly before 9 PM. Due to the intense smoke, a notification was sent out via the 112 emergency alert system, advising residents to keep their windows and doors shut to prevent smoke inhalation.

The location of the fire raised particular concerns, as several businesses storing flammable materials are situated nearby. A nearby guesthouse was also evacuated as a precaution. Fortunately, the fire did not spread beyond the building in question.

In light of the blaze, authorities suspended traffic on Kerkopos Street, from Gounari Street to Alipedou Street. Additionally, service on Metro Line 1, which connects Piraeus to Kifisia, was interrupted, forcing trains to stop at the Faliro station instead of Piraeus.

Although the cause of the fire remains unclear, its impact was felt widely, with thick, black smoke engulfing much of Piraeus and neighbouring areas. The response efforts underscore the challenges of dealing with fires in densely populated urban environments and highlight the importance of emergency preparedness in such scenarios.
