A recent event by Croatia’s Domovinski pokret party, held in the small town of Otok near Vinkovci, became the talk of the town when Josip Dabro, a former minister and current parliamentary representative, took to the stage. The gathering was one of the party’s pre-election celebrations, labelled as ‘Come Dance with Us in the Heart of Otok’.
The party, attended by over 400 people, was both an evening of music performed by local tamburica bands and an occasion for socialising with food and drinks offered at significantly discounted prices. However, it was Dabro’s rendition of the song “Pukni puško” that grabbed attention. This choice of song was particularly notable given its ties to Croatian patriotism and its performer Thompson, a controversial figure in the region.
The event momentarily turned tense as police officers arrived following complaints about loud music. Despite this, they found no violation of public order as the organizers had secured all necessary permits, allowing the music to continue until 4 AM. The incident led to suspicions among party members of possible deliberate disruption attempts.

Dabro, who has made headlines before due to a leaked video of him firing a gun while singing, showed his lighter side by joking about his previous escapades. His jovial participation in the party was widely shared on social media, once again putting him in the spotlight.
Domovinski pokret, securing the event’s costs through campaign funds, aims for a strong election performance. The absence of the party leader, Ivan Penava, was noticeable, though prominent figures such as the Minister of Economy were present.
This event underscores the dynamic and sometimes contentious nature of political life in Croatia, where cultural symbols like music can play significant roles in campaign strategies.
