Filip Hrgović has become world heavyweight champion after stopping British opponent Moses Itauma in the ninth round of their bout, with Itauma’s corner throwing in the towel to end the fight.
The Croatian boxer faced a difficult start to the contest. In the second round, Itauma rocked Hrgović with a hook just 45 seconds in, forcing the referee to begin a count. Hrgović recovered, but Itauma continued to apply pressure, dominating the early exchanges with sustained combinations.

A third round offered some encouragement for Hrgović, who landed several clean shots and showed more than he had in the opening rounds. However, in the fourth round, even when Itauma slowed slightly, Hrgović was unable to take advantage, and the young Briton closed the round strongly.
By the sixth round, both fighters showed signs of fatigue. Hrgović remained patient despite absorbing dangerous shots, and landed a strong blow to Itauma’s head near the end of the round. It was noted that Itauma, who was boxing beyond the sixth round for the first time in his career, was beginning to show cracks by the seventh.
The eighth round brought several critical moments for Hrgović, but he survived to the bell. Then, in the ninth, Hrgović finally seized his opportunity. A series of punches forced Itauma’s corner to throw in the towel, and referee Foster stopped the contest. Hrgović was declared world champion.
