Croatia has marked a significant milestone in sustainable transport with the debut of its first battery-powered train, making a step towards reducing carbon emissions. Manufactured by Končar, the battery train signifies a leap in modernising the country’s rail transport, particularly on non-electrified routes.
According to Oleg Butković, the Minister of Sea, Transport and Infrastructure, the train will primarily serve areas lacking in railway electrification. The autonomy of the train allows it to cover approximately 200 kilometres on a full charge, with charging stations positioned strategically in key towns such as Bjelovar and Osijek. “No CO2 emissions and elevated passenger comfort set this model as the technological avant-garde on the European railway landscape,” noted Gordan Kolak, President of Končar’s Management Board.
The introduction of the train took place as part of an initiative to modernise and sustainably develop the country’s transport infrastructure. Croatia’s focus on innovating in transport is part of broader efforts to adhere to the European Union’s green policy goals and carbon neutrality commitments.

Public reception to the battery train has been overwhelmingly positive, with passengers praising its comfort and environmental benefits. “It’s like a dream – smoother and cleaner than the old ones,” one passenger remarked. This enthusiasm underscores a broader acceptance and anticipation of green innovations in public services.
This project represents not only a shift in public transport but also signifies a transformative approach to national policies towards green solutions. Croatia continues to invest in sustainable projects, evident in this cutting-edge rail service that aligns with global environmental trends.
As countries strive to meet international climate targets, Croatia’s model of integrating battery-powered transport could serve as an exemplar for others aiming to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and embrace a sustainable future.
