A 4.5 magnitude earthquake was recorded in the early hours of the morning off the coast of the Greek island of Rhodes. The tremor struck at 05:45 local time, originating 35 kilometres northeast of Rhodes in the Aegean Sea.

The earthquake occurred approximately 449 kilometres east-southeast of Athens, highlighting the considerable distance from the Greek capital. Despite its moderate magnitude, the quake’s focal depth was measured at around 30.7 kilometres, which contributed to it being felt across the nearby islands.

Speaking to local media, Professor Efthimios Lekkas, president of Greece’s Earthquake Planning and Protection Organisation, assured the public that the event is familiar for the region known for its seismic activity. “There is no cause for concern,” he stated. “The earthquake is typical for this area, and we are monitoring the situation closely.”

The earthquake did not result in any reported damage or injuries, as is often the case with these kinds of moderate seismic events in Greece, where comprehensive architectures for safety and preparedness are in place. Residents and authorities, however, continue to remain vigilant following stringent emergency protocols.

While earthquakes in this region are a regular occurrence, the incident serves as a reminder of the continuing seismic activity characteristic of the broader Mediterranean area, historically known for tectonic movements. Greeks are accustomed to taking precautions and staying informed about seismic developments as part of daily life in this earthquake-prone region.
