A magnitude 5.0 earthquake was recorded off the coast of Zakynthos, near the Strofades islands, on Friday afternoon, according to the National Observatory’s Geodynamic Institute. The seismic event was detected at a focal depth of 10.8 kilometres and was centred approximately 60 kilometres west of the Strofades, in the Ionian Sea.
The tremor, which struck at 19:24 local time, was felt in the surrounding maritime regions; however, it did not extend its intensity to wider areas such as Kefalonia or the Peloponnese. Authorities ensured that it is being carefully monitored, although no significant damage has been reported. Notably, the event shares no direct relation with recent lesser quakes in the vicinity of Lixouri on Kefalonia.

The President of the Earthquake Planning and Protection Organisation (OASP), Efthymios Lekkas, has reassured the public that there is no immediate cause for concern. He emphasised that the undersea location of the quake provides a natural buffer, noting that the tectonic parameters in the area allow for larger seismic activity without substantial hazardous outcomes.
Lekkas highlighted that the recent seismic activities, both in Kefalonia and Zakynthos, are separate occurrences, categorically denying any connection between them while also minimizing the likelihood of follow-up quakes causing widespread disruption.
These latest tremors have reignited memories of past earthquakes that resulted in damage within the Ionian Islands, particularly the major seismic events of 2014. Nonetheless, the current seismic scenario appears to present no reason for heightened public alarm, as per expert analyses communicated by Greek seismic authorities.
