The Aliakmonas River in the town of Nestorio, Kastoria, has overflowed following intense and persistent rainfall, leading to widespread damage in the area. The overflowing river has inundated outdoor spaces, particularly impacting the site of local annual events known as the River Party.

The powerful currents from the river have caused considerable damage to the stone barriers along the riverbanks, as well as to the iconic stone bridge—a notable landmark in the area. Additionally, several building structures have suffered damage due to the flooding.

According to Christos Gosliopoulos, the mayor of Nestorio, the water descending from the nearby mountain of Grammos is so forceful that it has dragged everything in its path. The flooding has also posed significant issues for two pumping stations located near the river, which are essential for supplying water to the town.

The mayor further explained that, for public health reasons, the supply of drinking water from local wells to Nestorio’s reservoirs has been halted. This measure will remain in place until municipal teams can assess whether the river’s waters have contaminated the underground water sources.

In addition to Nestorio, extensive rainfall is reported throughout the Grammos region, resulting in damage to homes and roads in mountainous villages, like the village of Grammos itself. The damage extends to forest pathways used by loggers for timber harvesting.

So far, there have not been reports of additional issues in other settlements or cities within Western Macedonia. However, the Fire Brigade had to intervene once in the Neapolis, Kozani area to remove a fallen tree.
