To facilitate this large-scale event, the Attica Traffic Department has announced extensive traffic regulations that will affect several districts including Marathon, Rafina-Pikermi, Pallini, Glyka Nera, Agia Paraskevi, Cholargos, and central Athens.
Road closures are scheduled to begin on Friday, 8th November, at 7 PM, continuing into Sunday night. This will encompass key routes such as Leoforos Vassilissis Sofias and Leoforos Mesogeion, with specific sections closed off to ensure the safety and smooth progression of the marathon.

On Sunday, the marathon route will cause line diversions and specific closures from as early as 5 AM. To manage traffic flow and ensure athlete safety, adjustments to public transport facilities are being implemented. The metro system will commence operations earlier than usual, with lines 2 and 3 starting at 5 AM on Sunday to cater to the early crowd of athletes and onlookers.
Moreover, the frequency of metro services will increase, particularly on Saturday afternoon and throughout Sunday, adding extra trains to each line to accommodate the increased passenger volume. As part of the adjusted services, tram line 6 (Pikrodaphne to Syntagma) will be temporarily truncated to stop at “Fix” station from Saturday afternoon to Sunday evening.
These arrangements have been put in place in collaboration with the Greek Police and transport authorities to minimize disruptions and ensure the logistical success of the marathon, which is a major calendar fixture in Athens.
While these changes may cause inconvenience for some, they are necessary to maintain the integrity and safety of one of the world’s most historic marathon events. Residents and visitors are encouraged to plan their journeys ahead, making allowances for the traffic and transportation alterations over the weekend.
