The union representing the metro employees, known as S.E.L.M.A. (Athens Metro Operations Employees Union), has organised this stoppage in response to “serious contractual and financial issues” that remain unresolved despite prior commitments from responsible authorities. The union expressed frustration over the lack of progress and emphasised the urgent need for solutions. They state that resolving these matters is crucial for employees to continue delivering services effectively and without hesitation.

Among their demands, the workers seek an extension of a workforce programme administered by the Public Employment Service (DYPA) that currently involves 220 employees covering operational gaps. In addition to this, the union is advocating for economic revisions such as a hazard allowance and institutional changes including private health insurance and regular health checks for their members.
