In an unusual incident late on Sunday night, the old Euripus Bridge in Chalcis experienced a mechanical failure, resulting in significant traffic disruptions. The bridge, which had been raised to allow passage for ships, failed to return to its closed position, creating a traffic gridlock in the city.
According to reports from local media outlet evima.gr, citizens noted the bridge had been lifted for marine transit but encountered a technical issue when attempts were made to lower it back. The unresolved bridge malfunction has left motorists and commuters stranded or forced to take alternative routes. As eyewitnesses described the scene, numerous drivers abandoned their vehicles on one side of the bridge, adding to the congestion.

Responsibility for addressing the issue fell to the Chalcis Port Authority, which has been notified about the ongoing situation. The affected roads saw heavy traffic as vehicles were rerouted around the city.
The South Evia Ports Organization confirmed that a malfunction within the bridge’s electro-hydraulic system was the cause of the issue. Although technicians arrived promptly to assess the damage, they described it as a serious mechanical problem without an immediate fix, leaving the time frame for its resolution uncertain.
The old Euripus Bridge is a key infrastructural element, its temporary closure places significant strain on the only remaining connection— the Suspension Bridge of Chalcis—linking the island of Evia with mainland Greece. Residents and travelers have been urged to remain patient while efforts continue to correct the fault.
