The Greek journalistic community is mourning the loss of Iro Kariophyli, a respected police reporter, who passed away in the early hours of 1st July at the age of 53 after a brave battle with cancer. Her passing has been met with heartfelt tributes from colleagues, media organisations, and national institutions, reflecting her profound impact on the field of journalism.
Kariophyli started her career at the age of 18, working in radio at SKAI and later forged a distinguished career in television and radio with Alpha. Her peers describe her as a tenacious yet principled reporter, known for embodying the essence of journalistic integrity. Her efforts in police reporting were marked by a commitment to truth and an imbued sense of compassion, which she openly discussed in interviews. She recounted her experiences of covering often harrowing incidents, sharing that as she matured, she found herself more emotionally affected by the stories she reported on.
The Hellenic Police (ELAS) issued a statement expressing their sorrow at Kariophyli’s passing, noting her unique place in the reporting community as not merely an observer but also a member of what they consider the broader police family. They praised her professionalism and her ability to convey complexities of law enforcement with sensitivity and understanding. ELAS emphasized that her work significantly contributed to the public’s understanding of police operations, and her legacy will endure as a model of professional earnestness and mutual respect.

ESIEA, the Greek journalists’ union, also expressed their condolences, highlighting her dedicated work ethic and formidable presence as she navigated the often challenging landscape of police reporting. Despite the gruelling nature of her work, colleagues recall her steadfast grace and humility. Her ability to maintain excellent working relationships was evident throughout her career, which remained unblemished by disputes or controversies.
Politically, both the New Democracy party and PASOK have released statements acknowledging Kariophyli’s significant contributions to journalism, her uncompromising spirit, and her passionate dedication to uncovering the truth. Her journalistic career was noted for breaking new ground in reportage and maintaining a steadfast commitment to ethical journalism.
Kariophyli will be laid to rest in her hometown of Neos Skopos, Serres. Her funeral is scheduled for 2nd July at the Church of Saint Dimitrios, where family, friends, and colleagues will gather to pay their final respects to a revered figure in Greek journalism.
