Pangagiotis, a former commando, survived in these challenging conditions, undoubtedly aided by his prior training. His disappearance sparked a major rescue effort that involved both ground and aerial support, including specialized search dogs and drones, as reported by local authorities.

The young skier went missing after leaving designated ski areas during an outing with friends. Upon realizing his absence, they alerted local authorities, who responded swiftly. Rescue teams comprised 27 firefighters, as well as members of the 2nd and 7th EMAK units (Greek special rescue units), who combed the area in search of him.

Despite the harrowing experience, Pangagiotis was discovered in good health. He expressed gratitude towards the firefighters who found him, stating, “I was lucky, thanks to the firefighters.” He was subsequently transferred to a local hospital for precautionary checks.

The successful search brought immense relief to his family and friends, who celebrated the good news with emotional embraces and applause. Footage of these reactions, including a touching moment from his aunt, highlighted the collective relief felt by those involved.

The rescue was also publicly praised by Greece’s Minister for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Vassilis Kikilias, who commended the dedication and professionalism of all involved. In a statement, he said, “Their selflessness and professionalism serve as examples of service to society.”

While the incident ended positively, it highlighted the risks posed by venturing into uncharted snowy terrains without communication tools. It serves as a reminder of the importance of safety measures and preparedness when engaging in potentially hazardous outdoor activities.
