The hikers had embarked on their journey from the Leonidas monument early on Saturday, intending to explore the scenic snowy landscape. However, as they reached higher elevations, they realised the challenging conditions and impending darkness made it impossible to return safely. At approximately 4:00 p.m., the group contacted emergency services using the “112” line for assistance.

Efforts by firefighters from Lamia and nearby services commenced from the Thermopylae area. However, progress was hindered due to deep snow and fallen trees obstructing rural paths. Recognising the limitations, the rescue teams utilised an emergency tracked vehicle to navigate the demanding terrain, setting off from the village of Eleftherochori.

This operation highlights the dedication of the Greek emergency services in managing challenging rescue missions in harsh winter conditions, ensuring that the hikers were returned to safety without incident.
