An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.1 on the Richter scale was recorded early on Monday morning, 12th May, off the coast of Crete in Greece. According to the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens, the seismic event occurred at precisely 05:17 AM.

The epicentre of the earthquake was located in the sea region approximately 106 kilometres west-southwest of Falassarna, a town on the island of Crete. The quake occurred at an estimated depth of 7.4 kilometres beneath the seabed.

The location of the tremor was around 328 kilometres from Athens, the capital of Greece, causing localised but limited effects. There have been no reports of casualties or significant damage following the event. Local authorities continue to monitor the situation, although the relatively minor magnitude suggests minimal impact on the daily activities of residents.

Earthquakes are not uncommon in this region due to the island’s positioning in a seismically active zone in the Mediterranean Sea. Greek authorities maintain a robust monitoring system to swiftly respond to such natural events, ensuring public safety and preparedness.
