A major landslide has blocked a popular coastal path in the historic town of Nafplio in the eastern Peloponnese, southern Greece. The incident took place on the afternoon of Wednesday, 10 December, following a period of intense rain and bad weather in the area.
According to local media reports, at around 5:20 p.m. large quantities of soil and rocks detached from the hillside above the sea and collapsed onto the path that connects the coastal areas of Arvanitia and Karathona. This route is a well-known seaside walkway used by residents and visitors for walking, jogging and access to nearby beaches.
A fisherman who was some distance away reported seeing “large masses of earth and rocks” falling from the mountain towards the path. Based on current reports, there were no injuries, and no damage to nearby buildings has been mentioned.

Following the landslide, the Police and the Civil Protection service of the Municipality of Nafplio moved quickly to secure the area. Authorities have closed the path completely to all traffic and have placed warning tape and barriers at access points in order to prevent people from entering the dangerous zone.
Municipal and technical services are already on site to inspect the slope, assess the risk of further movement and plan clearance and stabilisation works. These actions include removing unstable rocks and soil and examining whether additional support structures are needed to protect the path and its users.
Officials have urged residents and tourists to avoid the wider area of the landslide until emergency works are completed and the location is declared safe. Local news outlets underline that the closure is a public safety measure rather than a permanent situation, but at present there is no official timetable for reopening the path.
The incident highlights how heavy rainfall can trigger sudden geological events such as landslides, especially in coastal and mountainous regions of Greece where steep slopes meet popular walking routes and beaches. For visitors who are not familiar with the country, it serves as a reminder to pay attention to local safety warnings and any temporary restrictions on well-known tourist paths.
