Today marks a significant milestone as the initial 65-kilometre section of the new motorway connecting Patras and Pyrgos is officially opened to traffic, following an inauguration ceremony led by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. This section, which extends from Pyrgos to Alissos, forms a crucial part of the broader 74.8-kilometre project.
The completion of this motorway section is poised to significantly reduce travel time between Athens and Pyrgos to approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes. Once the remaining 10 kilometres are completed by the end of November, the route will offer enhanced safety and comfort.
This highway, a state-of-the-art infrastructure, replaces the existing National Road by expanding it in certain parts while building a new extension. It features a dual carriageway with two lanes in each direction, complete with safety barriers and emergency lanes.
The motorway’s construction is part of the broader development of the Olympia Odos, which is set to become Greece’s third-largest highway, linking Western Attica with the important ports of Patras and Kyparissia, thus fostering regional growth.

The project faced multiple hurdles in its past, from failures in administrative processes to economic challenges, but these have been overcome since it was reincorporated into the Olympia Odos concession agreement in 2021.
Commenced with a budget of 295 million euros, the project’s costs rose to 385 million euros to allow for additional work that improves its functionality in response to local governmental and community insights. These additional efforts included paving secondary roads, enhancing key junctions, and improving flood defenses in adjacent areas.
The development has not only local implications but is seen as a project of national importance, connecting three significant Greek regions and providing enhanced roadway safety—a priority highlighted by many officials during the opening ceremony.
Prime Minister Mitsotakis emphasised the importance of the new highway for regional development and acknowledged the efforts to overcome past challenges, promising it would serve to rectify historical inequalities faced by Western Greece. The motorway is expected to bring not just faster travel times but also safer journeys and greater economic opportunities for the region.
