On Friday, 25th April, many regions of Greece experienced severe weather conditions marked by heavy rain and thunderstorms. The unsettled weather is attributed to an area of low pressure affecting the region, bringing significant rainfall and storm activity across most parts of the country.

The Greek National Meteorological Service (EMY) forecast highlighted the potential for strong thunderstorms and hailstorms, beginning in the morning and lasting until the evening, primarily affecting Thessaly, western and central Macedonia. By the afternoon, the eastern parts of the mainland and Crete also saw an increase in storm activity. Local authorities were on alert given the unpredictable nature and intensity of these weather systems.

In Attica, including Athens and its northern suburbs like Kifisia, Agia Paraskevi, and Penteli, heavy rain led to disruptions in traffic, particularly along key routes such as Kifisos Avenue. The combination of thunderstorms and frequent lightning strikes resulted in precautionary measures being taken by emergency services, ready to respond to potential floods or power outages.

Northern regions such as Macedonia and Thrace also encountered significant rainfall and thunderstorms throughout the day. As the day progressed, the weather began improving slightly in some areas, although sporadic showers continued into the evening.

The weather situation in the islands, including Crete and the Dodecanese, consisted of periods of rain and isolated thunderstorms largely in the afternoon, while winds from the west reached speeds of up to 5 Beaufort, contributing to the unstable conditions.

Despite the turbulent weather, temperatures remained relatively stable, ranging between 19 and 22 degrees Celsius in most locations. Meteorologists advised the public to stay updated with weather alerts, as similar patterns are expected to persist over the coming days, demonstrating typical springtime variability in Greece.

Residents are urged to exercise caution, particularly in areas susceptible to flooding and to heed advice from local authorities as the weather remains unpredictable.
