Authorities in Greece have apprehended six individuals linked to a significant antiquities smuggling ring on the island of Crete. The arrests were made following an extensive operation by the country’s organised crime unit, often likened to the Greek version of the FBI, supported by local police forces across Crete.

The suspects, comprising five locals and one person from Chalkida, have been taken into custody and are set to face a magistrate in Heraklion. Among those arrested is a well-known public figure, a high-ranking official in a governmental agency, recognised in the local society for his position.

The organisation operated by showcasing valuable antiquities in a residence in the village of Atsipades Monofatsiou. The artefacts included priceless Cycladic figurines and a statue head, considered by experts to be of considerable worth. The items are currently awaiting further examination by the archaeological authorities to determine their exact provenance and historical value.

Additionally, evidence unearthed during the investigation revealed that the arrested group had a well-structured hierarchy. One member managed the operations, coordinating with sellers, custodians of the artefacts, mediators seeking buyers, and transporters.

Law enforcement uncovered a vast array of items during searches of properties linked to the suspects. Seized objects include 15 ancient lamps, various statuettes and vessels, along with tools and equipment used potentially for further illegal activities. Furthermore, law officials confiscated firearms, ammunition, cannabis, and metal detection devices from the suspects.

The arrests underscore the ongoing efforts by Greek authorities to combat cultural heritage crimes and prevent the illegal export of national treasures. The suspects now face charges that include forming a criminal organisation, violating laws protecting antiquities, and other related offences.

The legal proceedings are underway as the judicial system assesses the full scale of the alleged crimes, which highlight the persistent challenges in protecting the rich historical legacy of Greece and its artefacts from illicit trade.
