A successful liver transplant was carried out on a 19-year-old patient at the Ippokrateio Hospital in Thessaloniki. The liver was donated by the family of a 12-year-old boy who tragically lost his life in the Arachthos River. The transplant procedure, which was lengthy and complex, concluded successfully on Tuesday evening at around 8:30 p.m.
The recipient of the liver, who had been suffering from a chronic liver disease, is reported to be in stable condition soon after the surgery. Professor Giorgos Tsoulfas, the director of the Transplant Clinic at Ippokrateio, noted that “the 19-year-old’s condition is improving,” despite having only just emerged from surgery.

Meanwhile, related medical efforts have also been successful. A kidney from a 14-year-old boy, who tragically died attempting to save the younger boy in the river, was transplanted into a 32-year-old patient from Alexandroupoli. The condition of the recipient is said to be developing well.
Prior to the transplant operations, a minute’s silence was observed by the medical teams to honour the memory of both young donors at the University Hospital of Patras, where the initial organ retrieval surgeries began. The organs, including kidneys and corneas, were transported to various hospitals in Athens and Thessaloniki for transplantation.
The donations and medical efforts highlight the profound impact of organ donation and the interconnectedness of the transplant community across Greece. Both the medical teams and families involved have received recognition for their roles in these critical procedures.
