Translation

Greece has successfully completed the first test of the European Train Control System (ETCS). The Deputy Minister for Transport, Konstantinos Kyranakis, monitored the test on the lines between Inoi and Tithorea. The ETCS is an automatic braking system that activates when speed limits or signals, such as a red light, are violated.

The first successful trial run of the European Train Control System (ETCS) has been completed in Greece, marking a significant milestone in the country’s transportation safety enhancements. The test, overseen by the Deputy Minister of Transport, Konstantinos Kyranakis, took place on the railway line between Oinoi and Tithorea.

The ETCS is a sophisticated automatic braking system designed to activate in response to specific circumstances. During the test, the system was assessed for its response to speed limit breaches and signals being ignored, such as running a red light. The trial involved several critical scenarios to ensure its capabilities were thoroughly examined.

In the first scenario, the system effectively activated when the train exceeded the pre-established speed limits for that section. In the second scenario, as the train approached a warning signal (orange light), gradual automatic braking was applied to control the speed. Further deceleration occurred if the driver attempted to exceed the controlled braking speed, eventually bringing the train to a complete stop.

The third scenario tested the system when the train violated a red signal. Immediate braking was engaged, and the train was brought to a full stop to prevent any potential accidents. A pre-existing system already implements automatic braking if the driver is unable to perform duties, activating 20 seconds after losing contact with the driver’s cabin controls.

Sources from the Ministry of Transport state that significant progress has been made in installing the ETCS along the Athens-Thessaloniki corridor. Furthermore, restoration work in the Thessaly region, slated to begin shortly, will see the completion of a critical part of the rail network. Efforts have been intensified to expedite the installation of the ETCS on board trains, enabling them to interface seamlessly with the rail lines and activate automatic braking when necessary. A detailed implementation schedule is expected to be announced soon by Mr. Kyranakis as part of the forthcoming legislative proposal for the Hellenic Railway Organization (OSE).
