A severe traffic jam on the Main National Road from Katerini to Thessaloniki over the weekend has led to the intervention of the Thessaloniki Appeals Court Prosecutor. The road congestion, reported to have delayed thousands of drivers for over four hours, intensified calls for accountability and preventive measures.
The situation prompted the Thessaloniki Appeals Court’s head, Mr Leonidas Nikolopoulos, to request a preliminary investigation into whether the decision to carry out urgent maintenance on the Aliakmonas Bridge during peak travel times involved any unlawful actions. The intervention comes amid public frustration over ongoing roadworks without transparent timelines.
The Aegean Motorway company issued an apology for the disruption, explaining that the significant delays resulted from two main factors: exceptionally high traffic volumes coinciding with the return of holidaymakers and the execution of vital safety repairs on the Aliakmonas Bridge. The repair work aimed to fix structural issues that posed risks to vehicle stability and prevented the reopening of multiple lanes until the new concrete had properly set.

Despite public announcements urging drivers to avoid the area during peak hours, the combination of returning motorists and lane restrictions led to unprecedented congestion. The incident has raised questions about the long-standing maintenance issues plaguing the Pieria section of the motorway, a point highlighted by the PASOK political party.
PASOK has urged the Ministry of Infrastructure to clarify whether the terms of the concession contract are being honoured and demanded detailed reports on oversight activities. They stressed the necessity for effective contingency planning during peak traffic periods.
Meanwhile, traffic disruptions were also reported in the capital city, Athens. Notably, accidents and vehicle breakdowns caused long delays on major Athens roads, including the Attiki Odos and Kifisos Avenue. A traffic accident in the left lane of the Attiki Odos, towards the airport, exacerbated these conditions, leading to delays of up to 25 minutes.
Cumulatively, these disruptions underscore the critical need for enhanced traffic management strategies and responsive infrastructure development across Greece’s crucial transportation networks.
