Farmers protesting near the Medyka border with Ukraine have decided to suspend their protest activities until 10th December, pending a response from the Ministry of Agriculture to their demands. The decision comes after a meeting with Minister Czesław Siekierski, who has committed to addressing the farmers’ concerns by the specified date.

The protesters, associated with the organisation “Oszukana Wieś” (Cheated Village), began their actions due to several grievances, including the government’s stance on the proposed EU-Mercosur free trade agreement. They fear this agreement might result in an influx of agricultural products from South American countries to Poland, potentially harming local farmers.

During discussions, Minister Siekierski assured the protestors that a coordinated governmental stance opposing the EU-Mercosur deal is being developed and will be presented at an upcoming cabinet meeting. Additionally, the Ministry is looking into adjustments regarding agricultural taxation and measures to support farmers affected by adverse weather conditions.

The farmers’ demands also cover broader industry concerns, such as excessive regulatory controls that they argue limit their economic freedom. They advocate for amendments to laws regulating animal livestock conditions and seek improved understanding and cooperation from urban policymakers.

Financial support related to tax reliefs was also adjusted, with resources reallocated to assist farmers who suffered losses due to frost, hail, and heavy rains. Despite the current pause in their protest, the farmers have not ruled out resuming their demonstrations if the government fails to take satisfactory action by the agreed deadline.

Both sides acknowledge the complexities involved in crafting resolutions that require legislative changes. Minister Siekierski has pledged to maintain an inclusive dialogue involving agricultural chambers, unions, and grassroots representatives to address the comprehensive needs of the farming community.
