On Wednesday afternoon, wildfires erupted in the Messinia region of Greece, affecting two main areas: Avramio and the Western Beach of Kalamata. The fires break out amidst strong winds, which have complicated containment efforts.

The fire at Avramio has mobilised substantial firefighting resources. A total of 36 firefighters armed with 11 fire-fighting vehicles are engaged in the battle against the flames. Additionally, an Erickson helicopter and three aeroplanes are providing aerial support, joining forces with volunteers and water carriers from the municipality of Messini.

In Kalamata, another fire remains active near the kart racing circuit at the western beach, despite repetitive containment efforts. Earlier in the day, the firefighting units swiftly neutralised another smaller fire incident at Triodo, a neighbouring locality.

Efforts to fully control the fires are ongoing, with firefighters aiming to contain and extinguish the blazes under challenging conditions. The prevailing strong winds across the region continue to hamper the endeavours of the fire brigade, highlighting the urgent need for ongoing vigilance and coordination among firefighting teams.
