In Greece, the deadline for issuing the new Personal Number (PN) is imminent, as citizens are urged to complete the process by 5 November 2025. This identifier will serve as a permanent, unique digital key for accessing a wide range of public services and, gradually, private sector services.
The introduction of the Personal Number aims to streamline operations across various public registries by consolidating multiple existing identifiers, such as the Tax Identification Number (AFM), the Social Security Number (AMKA), and the ID card number. It promises to reduce bureaucratic hurdles and enhance governmental efficiency through improved interoperability of systems.
Citizens can actively participate in the creation of their Personal Number by selecting two of the initial three alphanumeric characters. The third character is automatically generated to ensure the uniqueness and validity of each number. The full format is a 12-character sequence, which also integrates the AFM and a check digit.
The process requires access to the government platform pa.gov.gr, where users must log in with their Taxisnet credentials and authenticate via a One-Time Password (OTP) received through a registered mobile number. Users can review and rectify any incorrect details through the myInfo application or by visiting government offices such as Citizens’ Service Centres (KEP).

For those who do not obtain their PN by 5 November, the system will automatically generate it. This ensures that everyone, regardless of engagement with the process, will be equipped with a Personal Number to facilitate essential transactions, from tax submissions to public service interactions.
Each citizen’s PN will not change over time, regardless of alterations in identity, residence, or registry affiliations, making it a stable identifier for all official purposes. As a long-term initiative, the PN will notably appear on the reverse side of the new Greek ID cards.
Special processes are in place for minors and citizens who lack mobile or internet access, such as obtaining the PN in person at KEP offices or consulates.
This reform aligns with European directives and not only aids accurate data management but also enhances the overall citizen experience by ensuring precise and updated public records.
