In recent developments at the Petrova Hospital in Zagreb, assurances have been provided by Professor Slavko Orešković, the Head of the Clinic for Women’s Diseases and Childbirth, regarding the continuity of medical services. Contrary to circulating reports, Orešković confirmed that procedures, including abortions upon request, have not been suspended, alleviating concerns raised by some groups about service disruptions. He stated unequivocally, “All women who have sought services this week have received them.”
This reassurance comes amidst a period of organisational challenges linked to the hospital’s transitional phase from an older facility to a new one. Despite these logistical adjustments, Orešković emphasized that neither medical services nor patient care have been compromised.
Addressing the issue of conscientious objection within the medical staff, Orešković outlined that a subset of the staff exercises the right to abstain from procedures such as abortions, citing personal beliefs. However, he clarified that the operational framework of the clinic ensures that services remain accessible to all patients. Specifically, only 12 out of 49 gynaecologists have opted for a conscientious objection, alongside 60 out of 116 nurses and midwives involved in reproductive health services. “There has, and will be, no refusal of services to any patient,” he insisted, indicating regular updates and management in place to handle staff rotations and objections.

The approach employed in Petrova for conducting abortions generally involves medication-induced procedures. Patients undergo clinical and ultrasound examinations, and, within legal timelines, are prescribed medicinal therapies. Orešković detailed that while medical practitioners prescribe the necessary medication, the administering and explanatory roles are performed by nurses and midwives, stressing a collaborative approach in clinical practice.
On another note, Professor Orešković expressed an aspiration towards reducing reliance on abortions for contraception. “It remains the most hazardous form of contraception to a woman’s health and can occasionally pose life-threatening risks,” he noted, discussing both the implications and the ongoing conduct of around ten procedures weekly at the clinic.
Addressing rumours about a temporary suspension, which were amplified by certain women’s rights groups, he clarified that the issue stems from transient adjustments related to staffing and location changes, assuring that full service capacity has been maintained throughout these transitions.
