Three Croatian students have excelled at the 36th International Biology Olympiad, held from 20th to 27th July in Quezon City, Manila, by securing bronze medals. This achievement highlights the country’s growing prominence in international academic competitions.
Representing Croatia were four talented students: Irena Ferić from XV. Gimnazija Zagreb, Marijan Berišić from Gimnazija Vladimira Preloga in Zagreb, and Karlo Stašić from I. sušačka gimnazija Rijeka, who all clinched bronze medals. Additionally, Marta Gojević from Gimnazija Vladimira Preloga received commendation for her outstanding performance.

The event posed a significant challenge, requiring competitors to solve four practical tasks covering areas such as zoology and systematics, microbiology, cellular and molecular biology, and biomedicine. Furthermore, the students showcased their skills through two three-hour theoretical exams that tested their problem-solving abilities across various biological fields, according to Andreja Lucić, the national coordinator for the International Biology Olympiad.
This success follows a rigorous selection and training process. The students initially participated in a national-level biology competition organized by the Croatian Agency for Science and Education and were subsequently invited for additional testing and selection at the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb. There, they prepared under the supervision of the faculty’s Department of Biology staff, coordinated by Andreja Lucić and Petra Cvjetko, who also accompanied the students to Manila.
Through this accomplishment, Croatian students have demonstrated their capability and perseverance on an international stage, continuing a tradition of academic excellence and dedication.
