In a heartwarming rescue operation, members of the Croatian Mountain Rescue Service (HGSS) saved an adult dog from a 40-metre deep cave in the Lećevica area. This courageous effort was documented in a recently released video.
According to the Croatian Speleological Society, a group that explores local karst landscapes, a speleologist first discovered the distressed animal. The dog, identified as a Šarplaninac breed, appeared visibly frightened and hungry, indicating it had been trapped in the cave for an extended duration. The HGSS in Split quickly responded to the alert.

Four HGSS members, including three from the Split station and one from the Makarska station, were dispatched to the location. They successfully extracted the dog from the cave with a careful and coordinated effort, and promptly delivered it to the veterinary inspection team in Kaštela for further care.
The dog, affectionately named Jakov by the Bestie association, has since been sheltered at the Animalis shelter in Kaštela. In a social media update, the association expressed their delight and commitment to ensuring Jakov receives the love and attention he needs. “We are overjoyed. Jakov has overcome his hardest days, and we will do everything to ensure he is healthy, happy, and loved,” they announced.
This rescue has not only highlighted the dedication and skills of the HGSS but has also captured the hearts of animal lovers across Croatia. Jakov’s story is a testament to the collaborative spirit and kindness present within the community.
