In a recent development, Croatian President Zoran Milanović has announced his intention to propose Sandra Artuković Kunšt as the new President of the Supreme Court of Croatia. The proposal will be submitted to the Croatian Parliament, marking the start of the official appointment process.
This announcement follows a meeting of the Parliamentary Judiciary Committee, during which all necessary procedural requirements for suggesting a new Supreme Court president were satisfied. According to Article 116 of the Constitution of Croatia, the president is responsible for nominating candidates after reviewing the opinions of both the Judiciary Committee and the general session of the Supreme Court.

Notably, the Supreme Court’s general session, held in late May, did not endorse any of the three candidates under consideration, which included Artuković Kunšt. Despite this, Milanović’s decision moves forward without the judges’ backing, reflecting his executive privilege to nominate based on his discretion and broader consultations. The final decision, however, lies with the Croatian Parliament, which will vote on the confirmation of the proposed candidate.
Artuković Kunšt, a judge from the County Court in Zagreb, is now in the spotlight as the parliamentary process unfolds. The outcome will determine whether she ascends to one of the highest judicial roles in the country, shaping the future of Croatia’s legal landscape.
