On a lively Monday evening, Croatian President Zoran Milanović attended the much-anticipated opening of the “Mi Hrvati” exhibition at the Vladimir Filakovac Gallery, an event showcasing the art of one of Croatia’s most renowned contemporary caricaturists, Nikola Plečko, better known as Nick Titanik. The exhibition marks an impressive thirty years of Plečko’s career, featuring his latest works depicting well-known Croatian stereotypes and notable political figures.

Alongside President Milanović at the opening ceremony were curator Sonja Švec Španjol, gallery manager Svebor Vidmar, and the gifted artist himself, Nick Titanik. After formally launching the exhibit, President Milanović, accompanied by Plečko, strolled through the gallery to admire the eighteen fresh caricature pieces. Notably, some of these artworks hilariously caricature previous Croatian presidents, as well as President Milanović, who couldn’t conceal his amusement at seeing himself portrayed.

The gallery, nestled within the Narodno sveučilište Dubrava in Zagreb, buzzed with excitement as cultural adviser Zdravko Zima and Zagreb’s mayor Tomislav Tomašević also joined the president in appreciating the wit and artistry on display.

This exhibition is a testament to Nick Titanik’s prowess in capturing both the humorous and poignant aspects of Croatian society through art. The event celebrated not just his legacy but also his contribution to the rich tapestry of Croatian cultural discourse, reflecting the country’s unique identity and the significant roles its leaders play.
