A dramatic change in weather conditions has wreaked havoc in Dubrovnik and surrounding areas, with severe winds and a drop in temperatures affecting various forms of transportation. Consequently, three flights destined for Dubrovnik’s Ruđer Bošković Airport were diverted to Bari, Italy. These included services from EasyJet and British Airways from London, as well as a Ryanair flight originating from Berlin.

Additional six flights were redirected to Split, comprising Ryanair flights from Stockholm, Vienna, and Krakow, a KLM jet from Amsterdam, and Croatia Airlines flights from Frankfurt and Zagreb. Concurrently, a Austrian Airlines flight from Vienna was cancelled, contributing to widespread delays and cancellations of outbound flights from Dubrovnik to other European destinations.

The intense winds have also brought about significant disruptions on the roads. According to the Croatian Automobile Club (HAK), the Dr. Franja Tuđman Bridge in Dubrovnik has been closed to certain categories of vehicles, including double-decker buses, vehicles with trailers, and motorcycles, due to safety concerns. In a separate incident, the strong gusts toppled a tree onto a vehicle in Montovjerna and caused a construction site fence to collapse in Gruž.

Meanwhile, a cold front has led to snowfall in areas around Split. Light snows have started to fall at higher elevations across the Dalmatian hinterlands and near Omis. Notably, snow has blanketed the slopes of Mosor and Biokovo, with temperatures dipping below zero at locations like the Umberto Girometta Mountain Lodge.

Further compounding the transportation chaos, several key roads have been closed due to the violent winds. The DC553 Omiš bypass has been shut down, rerouting traffic through the city of Omiš. Moreover, motorway A1 between the Sveti Rok and Posedarje junctions, as well as several other key routes, have also faced closures, impacting both regional and local travel considerably.

Despite the turmoil on land and air, the windy conditions have yet to affect maritime transport in the Dubrovnik region, remaining operational amidst the tempestuous weather.
