The sanctions encompass over 200 individuals and entities, including Gazprom Neft and its subsidiaries, like NIS Serbia, where Gazprom Neft holds a 50% stake. In response, the Croatian pipeline operator JANAF has been working with government departments to mitigate the impact on its operations, as NIS is a crucial partner, relying on JANAF for significant crude oil transport.
Plenković highlighted this move as a strategic action against Russia’s policies, which he criticized for destabilizing Europe’s security and economic conditions. He noted that the sanctions provide a 45-day period for Serbia to address ownership issues concerning NIS, aiming to ensure continued oil supply through the JANAF pipeline, vital for Serbia’s energy and economic security.

JANAF, emphasizing its role as a responsible company, reported intensive collaboration with Croatian and US authorities. The company strives to find solutions that prevent disruption of its business and sustain oil supplies to Serbia, having adapted its operations since December 2022 to transport only non-Russian oil through its system.
Both the Croatian government and JANAF aim to maintain stability in regional energy supplies while ensuring compliance with international sanctions and minimizing the adverse effects of these measures on their operations and the wider regional economy.
