The 24th Zagreb Pride rolled through the Croatian capital under the slogan “Full of Pride” on Saturday, delivering strong messages of support for both trans rights and Palestine. The event passed without incident, according to police reports.

This year’s march placed a considerable emphasis on addressing the rise in transphobic and homophobic rhetoric within society and political discourse. Organisers drew attention to the bureaucratic hurdles still facing transgender individuals in Croatia who wish to change their gender markers on official documents. Limitations remain, as choices are restricted to male and female without the option for gender self-identification.

The procession, attended by both citizens and city officials, displayed banners with messages including “No division into pink and blue“, “Tolerance is not enough – We demand revolution“, and “Zagreb is our queer city“. The parade also took on a more political tone with slogans criticising the local government and expressing solidarity with Palestine through chants such as “Viva Palestina” and “No pride in genocide“.

“We cannot ignore the suffering caused by Israeli aggression,” participants declared, criticising what they described as the Israeli government’s conduct towards Palestinians. They strongly condemned what they referred to as “genocide” against the Palestinian people by Israel and called for a March for Palestine in Zagreb, planned to commence from the European Square.

Reflecting on broader issues within the global context, organisers highlighted the ban on Pride marches in Hungary and increasing attacks on LGBTIQ rights in the United States. The march was portrayed as a space for resistance, solidarity, and a celebration of diversity, with organisers maintaining: “Our struggle continues, our joy is resistance, our future is queer!”

The event’s significance was underscored by the presence of Zagreb’s Mayor Tomislav Tomašević, who reiterated the city’s commitment to equality and inclusivity for all its residents, regardless of sexual orientation, ethnicity, or religion. He reaffirmed the city’s plan to implement an action plan providing health and social services to the LGBTIQ community, illustrating local government support for the Pride.

The parade concluded at Ribnjak Park with a vibrant programme featuring musical performances and drag acts. Organisations and individuals, including the Belgian Embassy and local civic groups, provided donations to support the event, underscoring widespread community backing.
