A significant fire broke out on Friday afternoon at the fourth-floor apartment of Greek actor Petros Filippidis, located on Patision Street in central Athens. Initial reports suggest that the fire, which caused extensive damage to the property, originated from the rear balcony of the apartment.

At the time of the incident, Filippidis was inside the apartment but managed to exit safely with the help of a neighbour who alerted him to the danger. According to Filippidis’ lawyer, Michalis Dimitrakopoulos, the actor had been asleep and was fortunate to escape unharmed, as the fire spread rapidly. The prompt intervention of the neighbour was highlighted as crucial in preventing potential harm to the actor.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with arson being considered as a possible motive. Dimitrakopoulos indicated that no electrical appliances were operational at the time, raising suspicions around the unexplained origin of the blaze.

The Fire Service responded swiftly to the emergency call and deployed 23 firefighters with nine fire engines to contain the inferno. Their efforts ensured that the blaze did not extend to adjacent apartments, although smoke ascended to the fifth floor, causing temporary air quality issues.

The building’s residents, along with Filippidis, were evacuated without injury, and a team from the National Emergency Aid Centre (EKAB) was present on the scene. The authorities continue to examine various scenarios, including the possibility of foul play, as they conduct a thorough forensic investigation.

This incident follows Filippidis’ recent legal troubles, where he was convicted for attempts of sexual assault. Despite these developments, the actor remains free under a suspended sentence, a detail that has drawn considerable media attention since the fire.

As investigations proceed, the focus remains on determining the exact cause of the fire and ensuring the safety of the building’s occupants.
