Skopelos, the green island of the Sporades, is gaining significant attention in the German market after two major German travel and lifestyle outlets named it one of Europe’s hidden gem destinations.
HolidayCheck, a German travel website, featured Skopelos in a piece about secret European destinations for road trips, presenting it as an alternative for travellers who wish to explore Greece beyond its most crowded and well-known spots. The site highlighted the island’s natural environment, authenticity, beaches, traditional villages, and its connection to the film Mamma Mia!. HolidayCheck noted the growing desire among modern travellers to move away from heavily visited destinations, recommending islands from Spain, Italy, Sweden and Greece that “not everyone knows yet, but everyone would want to visit.”

The outlet drew particular attention to Skopelos’s distinct character, emphasising its extensive olive groves, centuries-old monasteries, and rich vegetation. Kastani beach was specifically mentioned as the beach from Mamma Mia!, while the island’s main town, Chora, was described as a traditional settlement notable for its unusually high number of churches within a relatively small area.
A second German outlet, WMN.de, also featured Skopelos as a standout Greek destination worth discovering. Rather than focusing solely on its film connection, the publication highlighted the island’s rich nature, picturesque villages, winding alleyways, walking trails, pine-fringed beaches, boat trips, and range of activities. WMN.de presented Skopelos as a destination capable of appealing to different types of travellers, from those seeking relaxation and contact with nature to visitors looking for more active exploration.
The increased international coverage is linked to efforts by the island’s local municipality to raise Skopelos’s profile abroad through planned contacts with representatives of international media, destination presentations overseas, participation in international exhibitions, television productions, and social media campaigns.
